Some UK media have had their first drives in ID7 prototypes. Here we round-up the ones we could find:

Auto Express:
Getting behind the wheel of the new Volkswagen ID.7 in prototype form is a surprise - thankfully, a pleasant one. Every VW ID model we’ve tried thus far has disappointed somewhat in terms of cabin design, material quality and infotainment, but the German company has been busy taking on board customer feedback from those earlier efforts, it seems.

The prototype, described as “90 to 95 per cent finished”, feels far more premium inside than we’ve come to expect from electric VWs and that bodes very well for the latest member of the ID family, which is best described as a ‘fastback’, when it arrives in final production form.

Car Buyer:
All in all, the Volkswagen ID.7 is shaping up to be a much more promising model than the first few models from the brand’s electric ID range of cars, and we look forward to getting our hands on the final production model.

Inside EVs:
Overall ride quality seems to underline Volkswagen’s positioning of this car as an executive experience. Over a few sections of bad pavement, loose gravel, and speed bumps in a village, the ride was extremely well damped and free of impact harshness of any kind. Tuning for the adaptive damping system, in every mode I tried, seemed biased towards comfort and high-speed stability more than sporty response.

Auto Car:
The ID 7 is already shaping up as Volkswagen’s most impressive electric car yet, then: a roomy and practical executive saloon with urgent and highly refined performance, well-judged dynamic properties, a generally smooth ride, contemporary digital functionality and a suitably long range.

Car:
Volkswagen’s methodical, if not conservative approach, to electric vehicles appears to be paying off: the most impressive thing about the ID.7 may not be the ID.7 itself, but the versatility of the MEB platform it runs on.

Slotting into the top of Wolfsburg’s electric range, the ID.7 makes total sense for consumers, and its lack of direct competition highlights just how lopsided the EV market is right now. But there are issues – take a look around the new flagship, and you’ll find it fixes a lot of mistakes seen on the rest of the ID range. If we’re honest, it also makes at least one of its own – because who is using those Smart Air Vents really?
